SLI Rig of the Month
Full Name: Rich S
Country: USA
City/State: Eden Prairie, Minnesota
Handle: °ThèDæcón°

Richard is definitely a modder; just take a look at his pictures. What you’re seeing is actually two computers in one case. Richard has modified the Daisho (by HiPe PC) for his personal use; turning his computer into a “super machine” complete with voice activation (he can order a pizza or turn on his favorite song while playing games). The main gaming rig is powered by an Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX6850 overclocked to almost 4GHz, two EVGA 8800 Ultra cards, 1000w heat dissipation liquid cooled with gold plated water blocks + Peltier, 8GB DDR2, 2 Terabytes RAID 0 hard drive space and an EVGA nf68 A1 680i chipset motherboard.

There is more, the second computer is a mini ITX rig with it’s own motorized 7” LCD touch screen, VFD media display, Bluetooth, Intel core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR2 mControl home automation software and media center speech recognition by One Voice. The two computers are networked together, this is how he can play a game on his primary computer and run MSN IM or as mentioned order a pizza or even say “Daisho: turn on the outside sprinklers and show me the front door security camera”. By the way his 3DMark 06 score is “just” 25202!

What is the main reason for overclocking your system? Gaming or simply because you could?
The sense of achievement from breaking records was my main goal. The sheer size of HiPe PC Daisho allows for much better airflow and natural heat dissipation in addition to the liquid cooling. Since this is my personal machine, I wanted to put the rig to the test and see what kind of speed it was capable of.

What game are you currently playing?
Unreal Tournament 2004 is still my love child. It’s an older game sure, but it’s the most intense online action I’ve found to date. Currently, I play UT2004 on my 65 inch Samsung Plasma at the highest resolution and the animation is still buttery smooth. I’ve also gotten into Bioshock recently. It’s the first game since System Shock 2 that I’ve seriously considered wearing a diaper for.

How long did it take you to build your Daisho, from start to finish?
I’d guess around 10 hours or so, with a good deal of Planning and Testing involved before, during and after. I changed out the lights and coolants three times before settling on the nice NVIDIA green. Gives it that cool radioactive look without the hassle of hair falling out and blistering skin :D

What was the biggest/toughest problem you ran into and how did you fix it?
Oh I’ve got to give a two part answer here. 1) Cable management! There are literally TWO computers inside this one case. It’s difficult to appreciate how many wires that is. There’s really only so much you can do, but the end result was nice! It’s all about patience and having a real love for what you’re doing. 2) Setting it all up! I’ve got the second computer as a personal game server, plus it streams media everywhere in my home and operates my entire home automation system. It’s all controlled via Media Center Communicator speech recognition, so I only have to say to my computer “play artist: Stevie Wonder” or “Dim the living room lights to 50%”. It took two of my coworkers and I the better part of three days to set it up the way we wanted. It’s also a heavy machine, which made me strongly consider lifting weights for a full five minutes before sitting down for another bag of Cheetos.

What’s your favorite pizza?
OMG, It’s a two way tie between “Pizza My Dear” on Warm Springs Rd. in Las Vegas, NV and Davanni’s Pizza in Eden Prairie, MN. I feel very strongly about my pizza and will highly recommend getting a Pepperoni, Onion and black olive with FRESH BASIL on top from Pizza My Dear, or a Chicago style deep dish from Davanni’s. I actually reversed the aging process and brought about 10 minutes of world peace the last time I had Davanni’s. And that’s the biggest perk of working for HiPe PC. The free pizza. I think it’s a ploy to get us so big that we can’t leave. Give it another five years and it may just work!
