Check out Ton’s Iron Man Mark 1 Case Mod!
A super gaming rig themed after Paramount Pictures’s Iron Man, featuring an nForce® 790i Ultra, two (2) BFG GeForce® 9800 GX2 in Quad SLI, Crucial Ballistix DDR3 2000, Silverstone 1200 Watt power supply, and liquid cooled by Danger Den. Ton has actually made the mask by hand from a sheet of aluminum.
"The computer components in this case mod would make Tony Stark proud. This case features the latest generation and best of breed computer hardware available. This is truly a Super Computer." – Ton Khowdee
Key features:
Iron Man Mask—True to the hero, the mask that is attached to the right side of the case was shaped by hand from a single sheet of metal. To accentuate the mask at night, an attached light source gives it a menacing glow.
Iron Man Text—The “IRON MAN” text is designed in big bold block letters and consists of a weathered metallic front layer and a UV reactive layer below. The UV layer glows under black light.
Iron Man Heart—To simulate the pacemaker-like device on Tony Stark’s chest, a cylinder reservoir is mounted to the case and glows bright blue when the computer is powered on.
Coolant Level Window—On the right panel, Ton constructed a window to give a visual indicator of the coolant level. In addition to the coolant tubing, Ton added conduit to give the appearance of internal machine wiring.
Top Exhausts Vents—Top exhaust vents are attached to direct the hot air to the rear of the case. Welding lines on the vents give an industrial appearance.
Dual Fill Ports—Two fill ports were mounted on the top to make it easy to add more coolant. Each fill port is attached to a different cooling loop.
Hard Drive Windows—Typically, hard drives are hidden deep inside the computer. For this project, Ton brought them to the forefront. The inner mechanics of the drive can be seen through the side panel window, which has been framed by rivets and mesh.
Large Side-Panel Window—The large side-panel window is the same shape as the Mark 1 eyelet. The large windows show off the inner components of the computer as well as the exotic liquid cooling.
Industrial Appearance—To give the case an industrial appearance, it is made from pristine, brushed aluminum, heavily weathered, and given dark-gray, hammered accents and rivets.
Case Lighting—A combination of black lighting and other colors bring the case to life at night. The coolant is UV reactive and glows with an eerie color as it moves through the case. Yellow, cold-cathode lighting clearly shows off the heavy-duty computer hardware.
“Radioactive” Reservoir—The lower portion of the case houses a 15” cylinder filled with UV yellow coolant, which glows when black light is applied. The yellow ooze flowing through the outer cylinder cage gives the case the appearance that it is nuclear powered.
1) What motivated you to build the rig?
"I have been a big fan of IRON MAN and Marvel comics since I was a kid. I have always wanted to build a Super Hero-themed case mod. After watching the trailer for the IRON MAN Movie and seeing the Mark 1 suit, I knew it would be the perfect theme for a case mod."
2) Have you build any other themed rigs? If yes, what did they look like?
"I have built a few other themed case mods. Some of the recognizable projects would be my Team Fortress 2 Sentry Turret and Dispenser mod. I built a Level 3 Sentry Turret PC and Dispenser Monitor Mod to look like the actual in game objects. I am actually working on finishing up the project by turning my External CD Drive to an Electro-Sapper to finish off the project. I also built the “Super Hornet” and “Tribal Eclipse” case mods that are featured in ClubSLI."
3) Are you going to get free tickets to the movie?
"No free tickets for me, but maybe NVIDIA has some friends in Hollywood that can help me out. I would love to go see the movie when it comes out. It would be great to get a chance to see the real Mark 1 suit in person.."
